Scripps Ranch · made to order

The best sandwich in San Diego.

That is a big thing to say out loud, so here is what it rests on. Bread baked here every morning. Salumi imported from Italy and sliced when you order, not before. A dressing we make in-house that we will not tell you the recipe for.

Ten of them on the board. Come argue with us about which one wins.

Three things nobody else here bothers to do

This is the whole argument, and it is not complicated

01

The bread is ours

Baked in this building starting at five in the morning. Crust that gives, crumb that holds up to oil and vinegar for the length of a lunch break. Nothing arrives here on a truck already sliced.

02

Sliced when you order it

Mortadella, prosciutto di Parma, hot capocollo, finocchiona. Imported, hung, and cut on the slicer while you stand there. Meat that has been sitting sliced in a plastic tub is a different product and you can taste the difference.

The Signature Dressing

Made here, in batches, and it goes on most of the board. People ask for it by the jar. We have not decided how we feel about that yet.

“I ordered the Spicy Sicilian and it was fire — perfectly fresh, packed with flavor, and generously sized (big enough that I probably could’ve saved half).”

Questions we get at the counter

If yours is not here, call and ask. Somebody who actually makes the sandwiches will answer.

What makes a Buon Cibo sandwich special?

We bake our bread here and slice imported salumi to order. Pick a favorite from the board, or ask us to help you choose. The best way to find your favorite is to come by the counter.

How long does a sandwich take?

About six minutes at the counter, longer at the noon rush on a weekday. Call ahead and it will be wrapped and waiting when you get here.

Can I order a sandwich without bread?

Yes. Ask for it in a bowl and we build the same sandwich over greens. Same price. You can also ask for a roll or a wrap instead of the house loaf.

Do you have vegetarian options?

The Artichoke and Red Pepper Caprese is vegetarian as built. Most of the board can be made without meat, and the Signature Dressing is vegetarian.

Can I get the Signature Dressing to take home?

People ask constantly. We have not started bottling it. Ask at the counter and see what happens.

Do you do sandwich platters for an office?

Yes, fifteen people or more, $19 a head. Halves cut and labeled, vegetarian and no-pork options marked. Twenty-four hours notice. Everything is on the catering page.

Go decide for yourself.

Call it in and it will be wrapped and waiting, or walk up to the counter and watch it get built. Either way it takes about six minutes.
